This building is a Walgreens located in Miami Beach. It opened in 2014. It’s a pretty cool and interesting building, and I was going to leave it at that. However, I just looked it up and found a Miami Herald article that says this building is supposedly “Art Deco-inspired.” What???
Look, this is a solidly postmodern building that appears to be most connected to brutalism, an interesting architectural movement that bears few similarities to Art Deco. To say this is connected to Art Deco is like saying Jackson Pollack is connected to Leonardo da Vinci; sure there’s an artistic lineage there, but come on. Like I said, I actually like this building, but the architecture profession really ought to stop making these ridiculous claims.
