What exercises for certain rep ranges? - In the previous 2 post we’ve discussed about optimal hypertrophy rep ranges occurring at 6-20 reps and which exercises in particular for the 6-12. In this post we’ll discuss about the 12-20+ rep ranges. - 12-20 rep group - 6-12 reps group - The less complex the exercise the higher the reps can be. Less complex exercises are isolation exercises which require only movement in one joint such as bicep curls, skull crushers, leg extensions and hamstring curls. Machines can also be counted as less complex as there are less stabilising muscles involved. - There is nothing wrong with training in the 6-12 ranges with less complex exercises but you will definitely get much better stimulation from big compound exercises. This is because squats will allow you to load the quads a lot more than a leg extension or a bench press will allow you to load the chest more than a pec fly. So rather than going for low reps, heavier weight with less complex exercises you can use the 12-20+ to create “metabolic stress”. Metabolic stress is the “burning” and “pump” feeing you get after completing lots of reps which is a very important component of hypertrophy (the only claim that body builders got right 🤣). - Hypertrophy occurs in a large repetition range but mostly should be covered by the 6-20. Each end of the scale will have a time and place with training phases and exercise selection. If you ever want to grow your quads and almost want to cry yourself home try doing 4-5x20 reps of legpress because it is pure filth.
