Today we shared Kellan’s story as well as the story of the support we have received since his death at the Agrace Grief Support Center. The ladies accompanied me and were asked to share their thoughts and opinions on the grief support they have received. It was incredible to sit and listen to them so eloquently speak of grief, what they’ve learned, and what they would like new families to know. So proud to be raising these incredible, composed, empathetic, fearless, dynamos. We did some good Bubby work together today and now we are basking in all the yellow. #iluvbubby #yellowcokeice #grief #griefsupport #agrace #pediatrichospice #pediatricpalliativecare #yellowlove #yellow #theladies #lbandaj #thirstythedinosaur #sunflower

“Fears and prejudices directed against minority communities are too easy to evoke and exaggerate, often to serve the political agendas of those who promote those fears. I know what it is like to be at the other end of such scapegoating and how difficult it is to clear one’s name after unjustified suspicions are endorsed as fact by the government. If someone is a spy or terrorist they should be prosecuted for their actions. But no one should ever be locked away simply because they share the same race, ethnicity, or religion as a spy or terrorist. If that principle was not learned from the internment of Japanese Americans, then these are very dangerous times for our democracy.” - Fred Korematsu to the San Francisco Chronicle, 2004 . . . . . #japaneseincarceration #asian #asianactivism #oriental #asianamerican #asianidentity #activism #yellowpower #yellowlove #yellow #fredkorematsu #korematsu #racial #prejudice #racism

Resisting the “Internment,” Fred Korematsu stayed behind with his Italian girlfriend while his family went into “relocation.” He changed his name to sound more Hispanic and paid for reconstruction surgery to widen his eyes, but was scammed as the doctor did nothing to his eyes and only fixed a broken nose. . . He was turned in by a local and authorities caught up to him. As he was put into the officer’s car, his girlfriend spoke with the officer. He never knew what she said because the next thing she did was walk away. Fred never saw her again. . . Fred eventually took his case all the way to the Supreme Court to fight his case stating that it was unconstitutional to incarcerate an American citizen based on being born of a certain race. He lost that case inciting wartime necessity and was convicted for resisting. .. . For the next 40 years, that’s how his case stood. It wasn’t until the 1980’s when he brought the case back to the Supreme Court with new hard evidence that the government knew the Japanese living in America were not a threat BEFORE the events of Pearl Harbor. Although his original case still stands as good law, Fred was pardoned of his conviction and given the Presidential Medal of Freedom. . . . He later became an activists for the reparations and Civil Liberties Act of 1988. He fought for the rights of all Americans in hopes that this country would never do it again. . . Fred T. The Yellow Power Movement envisages a new role for Asian Americans: . . It is a rejection of the passive Oriental stereotype and symbolizes the birth of a new Asian‐one who will recognize and deal with injustices. The shout of. Yellow power, symbolic of our new direction, is reverberating in the quiet corridors of the Asian community. . . The Asian Americans' current position in America is not viewed as a social problem. Having achieved middle‐class incomes while presenting no real threat in numbers to the white majority, the main body of Asian Americans (namely, the Japanese and the Chinese) have received the token acceptance of white America. . . Precisely because Asian Americans have become economically secure, do they face serious identity problems. Fully committed to a system that subordinates them on the basis of non‐whiteness, Asian Americans still try to gain complete acceptance by denying their yellowness. They have become white in every respect but color. . . In the process of Americanization, Asians have tried to transform themselves into white men‐both mentally and physically. Mentally, they have adjusted to the white man's culture by giving up their own languages, customs, histories, and cultural values. They have adopted the "American way of life" only to discover that this is not enough. . . . .The Emergence of Yellow Power (Gidra, 1969) Amy Uyematsu . . . Yellow Power: The Asian American movement, as it would come to be known, was a political awakening for young activists wrestling with stereotypes and questions of identity, caught between the myth of the American Dream and the reality that it was not meant for people who looked like them, angry at the historical degradations their parents and grandparents had been forced to endure. Embracing their Asian American identity as a source of power and pride, they soon channeled those frustrations into concrete action. . . The notion of Asian America was rooted in a pan-Asian identity that would harness the power of a “consolidated yellow people” against the forces of racism and imperialism. Inspired by the radical politics of the Black Liberation Movement and frustrated with white progressives’ failure to engage with race in a meaningful way, Asian Americans set out to create their own movement. . . Yuji Ichioka, who taught the first Asian American studies class at UCLA, is credited with coining the term “Asian American” in 1968. He and his partner Emma Gee, then student activists at UC Berkeley, founded the Asian American Political Alliance out of their living room that summer, adopting the name to unify previously separate groups of ethnic Asian students—and to subvert the “Oriental” trope thrust on them by whites unable (and unwilling) to differentiate between them. As the (in)famous Richard Aoki put it, “Oriental was a rug that everyone steps on, so we ain’t no Orientals. We were Asian American.” . Although there was some pushback—especially from Filipinos and others who felt marginalized within the larger Asian American community—this self-determined label caught on and began to spread as additional AAPA chapters and other pan-Asian organizations sprouted up across the country, both on and off campus. In just two years there were at least forty grassroots organizations, four newspapers, and ten student and community conferences flying the Asian American flag. . . .From @denshoproject . #japaneseincarceration #asian #asianactivism #oriental #asianamerican #asianidentity #activism #yellowpower #yellowlove #yellow #korematsu #racial #prejudice #kochiyama #aoki

The Birth of Yellow Power: By watching African Americans expose institutional racism and government hypocrisy, Asian Americans began to identify the ways in which they, too, had faced discrimination in the United States. “The ‘black power’ movement caused many Asian Americans to question themselves,” wrote Amy Uyematsu in “The Emergence of Yellow Power,” a 1969 essay. “‘Yellow power' is just now at the stage of an articulated mood rather than a program—disillusionment and alienation from white America and independence, race pride and self-respect.” . Black activism played a fundamental role in the launch of the Asian American civil rights movement, but Asians and Asian Americans influenced black radicals as well. African American activists often cited the writings of China’s communist leader Mao Zedong. Also, a founding member of the Black Panther Party—Richard Aoki—was Japanese American. A military veteran who spent his early years in an internment camp, Aoki donated weapons to the Black Panthers and trained them in their use. . When not only blacks but also Latinos and Asian Americans from various ethnic groups began to share their experiences of oppression, indignation replaced fear about the ramifications of speaking out. Asian Americans on college campuses demanded a curriculum representative of their histories. Activists also sought to prevent gentrification from destroying Asian American neighborhoods. . . And we became outraged at the depths of the economic, racial and gender exploitation that had forced our families into roles as subservient cooks, servants or coolies, garment workers and prostitutes, and which also improperly labeled us as the ‘model minority’ comprised of ‘successful’ businessmen, merchants or professionals.” . .💛 . The post-WWII generation of Asian Americans—including many Sansei influenced by their parents’ wartime incarceration and keen to break the silence around historical and contemporary injustice—had grown up against a backdrop of U.S. imperialism in Asia and come of age as the Vietnam War reached its bloody climax. Bruce Iwasaki, writing for Gidra in January 1973, explained: . . “The U.S. involvement in Vietnamese affairs began around the time we were born; stayed hidden from the national consciousness during our years of innocence; escalated as we matured; and has reached climactic proportions while our generation gains the will and seeks the means to end that involvement. Much as we forget, ignore, or grow numb to it, the war has been a constant shadow in our lives.” . . Activists young and old had long organized against discrimination at home, but Vietnam globalized the movement and helped to unify different ethnic Asian groups under a common cause. Violence in Southeast Asia—linked to historical atrocities in the Philippines, Korea, Japan, and Okinawa—gave Asian Americans the language to talk about their own experiences here in the United States. Centuries of Western colonization and exploitation in Asia was responsible not only for the war against their “cousins” in Southeast Asia, but for the diasporas that brought their immigrant ancestors to America, for the inherited trauma of state-sanctioned violence at Manzanar and Rock Springs, for the “dehumanizing conditions in our Asian communities, barrios, black ghettos and reservations.”. . .from @denshoproject . . #japaneseincarceration #asian #asianactivism #oriental #asianamerican #asianidentity #activism #yellowpower #yellowlove #yellow #korematsu #racial #prejudice #kochiyama #aoki #blackpower #powertothepeople #thirdworldliberation #vietnamwar #vietnam #protest

The Third World Liberation Front Strikes of 1968-69 were a defining moment for the burgeoning Asian American movement. At San Francisco State, AAPA (which was mostly limited to Japanese, in practice if not in theory), Intercollegiate Chinese for Social Action, and the Pilipino-American Collegiate Endeavor came together to form the “Asian contingent” of the student-led strike. From November 1968 to March 1969—the longest student strike in U.S. history—Asian American, Black, Chicano, and Native students clashed with administrators, and occasionally police, to establish an ethnic studies department and increase the number of students and faculty of color at the school. A second strike took place at UC Berkeley from January to March 1969. . . These strikes were heavily publicized, and helped upend popular depictions of Asian Americans as quiet foreigners forever striving to assimilate into white society. By choosing Third World solidarity over model minority complicity—not only during the strikes, but also in support of the United Farm Workers, Native occupations at Alcatraz and Wounded Knee, the Free Huey campaign, and other concurrent issues—Asian Americans rejected “the passive Oriental stereotype” in favor of “a new Asian… who will recognize and fight injustices.” . . The right to self-determination is all aspects of our lives is the principle which can ‘smash’ not only racism but the system itself. . . Third World Liberation Front believes that basic changes in the socio-economic structure of this country will have to take place if racism is to be totally eliminated. “Individual or institutional racism flow from a system, capitalism, which profits and perpetrates it,” states a TWLF editorial. . Another immediate goal is the elimination of existing situations where Third World people are "exploited," exploitation being defined as a practice of profiting at the expense of another. The Third World believes that all forms of explication, whether perpetrated by whites or non-whites, must be dealt with. As one Asian member explains, "when we find people in our own community exploiting their own people, we will come down hard on these people." . Article titled: End Racism and Exploitation . Asian American history is filled with innumerable racist incidents. Some are overt, such as the one given [below]. Others are covert - psychological oppression, educational deprivation, and economic exploitation - and are equally destructive. . In Los Angeles - 1871, A mob of a thousand persons marched into the Chinese section, seized victims, overpowered the officers of the law and hanged at least 22 Chinese men, women, and children. No attempt was made to bring these people to justice. . . We tried only the tactic of adaptation. We responded to our treatment with an “Oriental” smile and a polite “thank you.” . . This is a new role for the Asian American. it is a rejection of the passive Oriental stereotype and symbolized the birth of a new Asian - one who will recognize and deal with injustices. The shout of Yellow Power, symbolic of our new direction, is reverberating in the quest corridors of the Asian community. . . Yellow Power means that we as Asian Americans are seeking greater control over the direction of our lives. It also expresses a determination to effect constructive changes in the larger Society. Is it not a call for Asians to move out of the mainstream of American life, but instead it says that we should be able to dictate some of the terms of entry into that mainstream. . . . . One of my all time favourite restaurant/ cafe in Lucknow-essentially a heritage home turned into a boutique hotel with two in-house restaurants - Italian and Indian Awadhi food. The Italian restaurant is definitely my favorite and while authenticity is questionable on a few of the dishes- desserts AND pastas- the cozy, moody vibe and unobtrusive, quick service gets me going each time. It’s a family favorite too and the outside areas- gardens, little cafe style seating for alfresco dining in good weather (oh so rare in this sweltering city) for brunch/coffee etc and vintage car, scooter props are great for them insta moments. Totally recommend. And for someone who doesn’t gush often and is critical about most everything- know that this is a good one.
